Galle is thriving. The fortified old town is enjoying an artistic renaissance and the beautiful beaches around it are dotted with luxurious villas and classy boutique hotels. The Portuguese captured Galle from the Sinhala kings in 1587 and erected the first fortification, a single wall fronted by a moat which extended from the sea to the harbor.  Galle is fast becoming one of the most popular places for expats outside of Colombo and its ‘piece de resistance’ is the 17th century Dutch fort, a UNESCO World Heritage site.
